Flood Risk and Safety

  • CHRISTUS Heritage Hall - The Village at the Incarnate Word 4707 Broadway Alamo Heights, TX, 78209 United States (map)

Flooding is by far the #1 weather threat to life and property in South Central Texas. But it is also endemic to our area -- part of the natural geologic and life cycles that make the Hill Country, Balcones Escarpment, and the Edwards Aquifer special. So, the best way to respond to the challenge is to learn to live with the natural conditions. Flood Risk and Safety will bring the latest and best information on how to approach avoiding, preparing for, or mitigating losses to life and property from flooding. The result will greatly reduce anxiety about heavy rain and flooding, and  turn apprehension into the calm of understanding how to help yourself, family, and community respond.

Our presenter, Jon Zeitler, serves as the Science and Operations Officer for the National Weather Service, Austin-San Antonio Forecast Office, in New Braunfels, Texas. He previously served in NWS positions at Houston-Galveston, Texas: Rapid City, South Dakota; and College Station, Texas. Before joining the NWS, Jon was a climatologist at The Southeast Regional Climate Center in Columbia, South Carolina; The Texas State Climatologist’s Office at Texas A&M University; and The Agricultural Extension Service at Iowa State University.

Mr. Zeitler holds a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from Iowa State University and a Master of Science degree in meteorology from Texas A&M University.  His professional interests are weather safety and preparedness, severe storms, and flash flooding. He has authored research papers on these and other topics. Jon is a member of the National Weather Association, American Meteorological Society, and the Texas Floodplain Management Association, and he has served on committees, boards, and as a journal editor and reviewer. He is also a Certified Floodplain Manager.
