Cancelled: How Trees Define the Headwaters Sanctuary

  • Headwaters Sanctuary San Antonio, Texas 78209 United States (map)

WEATHER CANCELLATION

Located in central San Antonio, the Headwaters Sanctuary demonstrates thoughtful land stewardship that secures the future of an urban forest. Bringing the Headwaters Sanctuary back to health has been an epic effort to tip the balance in favor of native trees. Staff and volunteers clear large growths of "invasive species” to bring tree diversity back to the forest. Thanks to all their work, native tree saplings are reviving in some sites, and paths allow us to reach these sites.

How is the Headwaters Sanctuary an “urban forest,” that contributes to our city’s ecology and our own health and well-being? What native trees get better root development and light to prosper now? Why does it all matter, in terms of how the forest functions? This leisurely walk will cover tree identification, both native and invasive, and no prior experience is needed. Our guide, Texas Master Naturalist Lissa Martinez, has volunteer experience measuring exceptionally large, very old trees with the Texas Forest Service.

The walk is limited to 15 guests. Participants will be walking on mulched paths with moderate grade at times. Registration is required.
